Betsy Fleming has served as president of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., since October 2005. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor’s in fine arts, received a master’s in the history of design from the Royal College of Art in London and earned a doctorate in the history of art from Yale University.
Fleming has served in administrative and curatorial positions at the Frick Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She has taught at Yale and Parsons School of Design.
Immediately prior to her arrival at Converse, Fleming was executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, S.C. She is an Aspen Institute Liberty fellow and also serves on the boards of the Women’s College Coalition and the National Association of Independent Colleges. She lectures widely on art and design history, creativity, women and leadership.
