Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond since 2012
Ed Willingham is president of First Citizens BancShares Inc. and its First Citizens Bank subsidiary, based in Raleigh, N.C. Willingham was named to the position in 2009 after serving as the bank’s regional executive in central North Carolina, where he managed bank operations in 22 counties.
Willingham joined First Citizens in 1987. He had previously worked in corporate business development for Wake County, was promoted to Raleigh city executive in 1988 and was named regional executive in 1991.
His industry leadership includes serving with the North Carolina Bankers Association and the Wake County affiliate of the North Carolina Community Foundation. His is a member of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
In 2006-07, Willingham chaired the Regional Transportation Alliance, and he continues to advocate for transportation and growth issues in the Triangle. He has held leadership roles with the YMCA of the Triangle and the United Way of Wake County.
Willingham earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Davidson College and an MBA from the University of North Carolina.
