Overview

The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond is pleased to be a part of Baltimore Data Day for the third year. In 2013, we will open Data Day by hosting the keynote address and an opening reception at the Richmond Fed’s Baltimore Branch from 3 - 6:30 pm. (Registration is at 2:30.) The full-day conference will follow at the University of Baltimore Friday, July 12.

The keynote will focus on the emergence of Big Data as a tool for understanding community dynamics. We will consider Big Data from two vantage points:

Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and co-author of The Future of Big Data report (2012), will discuss the future of big data based on work conducted by Pew and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University. His talk will touch on a range of issues including privacy concerns, data analysis, and technical problems with big data.

Dr. Jennifer Golbeck, Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at the University of Maryland, will offer an interactive discussion of how big data may be employed at the community level with a focus on data gathered through social networks such as Twitter.
