Austin J. Slater

Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond since 2015

Austin J. “Joe” Slater Jr. is the president and CEO of the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative Inc. in Hughesville, Maryland. He was previously chief financial officer.

As a former vice president with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and a former CEO of a rural North Carolina utility, he has extensive leadership experience in the electric cooperative industry.

Slater has served as both director and chairman of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, the Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board and the College of Southern Maryland. He is currently a director for Community Bank of the Chesapeake and the Tri-County Financial Corporation, as well as a director on the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center board. He is also active in many civic and community organizations. Additionally, he serves on several industry-specific boards, including chairman of ACES Power Marketing and the founding secretary of the National Renewables Cooperative Organization. Slater was recognized by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce as a “Business Hall of Fame” recipient in 2013, and as the 2014 “CEO of the Year” by the College of Southern Maryland Leading Edge Awards.

Slater holds a MBA in finance and investments from George Washington University, a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Shepherd University and an associate’s degree from the College of Southern Maryland.
