Kartik Athreya

Kartik Athreya is executive vice president and director of research. He leads economic research efforts at the Richmond Fed and advises the Bank’s president on matters related to monetary policy, banking and financial markets.

Kartik Athreya was appointed executive vice president and director of research of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond on April 1, 2015.

In this role, Athreya leads economic research efforts at the Richmond Fed and advises the Bank’s president on matters related to monetary policy, banking and financial markets. He also serves as a member of the senior leadership team.

Athreya joined the Richmond Fed in 2000 as an economist, was promoted in 2005 to senior economist, and then in 2010 to senior economist and research advisor, focusing on macroeconomics and household finance. He was appointed group vice president of microeconomics and research communications in 2012.

His work has been published in numerous economics and academic journals and he is the author of “Big Ideas in Macroeconomics: A Nontechnical View,” published by The MIT Press in 2013. He has taught a doctoral course at the University of Virginia. His articles and papers can be found on the Richmond Fed website.

Athreya earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Iowa State University.

Athreya was born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1971. He is married to Teri Athreya and has three children.
