Engaging Strategic Partners in Community Development

Community Development

At the South Carolina Association for Community Economic Development (SCACED) Capacity Building Workshop in Walterboro, South Carolina, community partners came together to look at how small, rural municipalities can develop their communities and improve their economies. Program participants discuss People, Place, Practice and Small Business, the core components of community development, as these strategies related to the federally designated Promise Zone region of South Carolina.

“We focus on capacity building because it yields significant impact in the short term through support of local intermediaries. Knowledge-sharing of community investment strategies that the Richmond Fed provides is a jump start in distressed communities,” said Jeanne Milliken Bonds, Regional Community Development Team Lead.

“The economic divergence occurring within our District between and among prosperous and distressed regions requires a focus on the creation of local capacity to help ensure sustained community leadership with the tools to adapt and evolve with the ebb and flow of the economy.”
