Karen Legato

Karen Legato, Executive Director of Health Brigade, has served over 30 years in the not-for-profit sector. Her passion and vision is shaped by working with those most vulnerable in society with the least resources. Her medical social work background includes direct services, program development, education, community partnerships, advocacy and executive leadership. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia Tech, Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, and a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In 2016, the National Association of Social Workers, VA Chapter, named Karen "Social Worker of the Year." In 2018, she was selected as a Richmond Times-Dispatch "Person of the Year" honoree. In 2019, the Virginia General Assembly recognized her in House Resolution Number 389 for her dedication and service to the Richmond community. Later that same year, Our Health Magazine named her one of "16 Richmond Health Care Leaders."

Karen is often requested to speak about health equity and the social determinants of health in the safety net. A collaborator at heart with a passion for social justice, Karen is most noted for her enthusiasm and ability to seize creative opportunities to make things happen.
