During the week of Thanksgiving, more than 100 Bank supervision and discount window employees volunteered across all three of our locations — Baltimore, Charlotte and Richmond — at several nonprofits. Employees also conducted food drives to benefit their local food banks. Many of these employees travel extensively, but everybody seems to be in the office during this week. We take advantage of the break from traveling to give back to our communities.
In case you wondered …
Employees who work in bank supervision examine about 300 financial institutions every year to make sure our financial system is safe and sound. We look at whether they are financially healthy, have fair and equitable deposit and lending practices, and are meeting the needs of their customers.
Through the “discount window,” we can give financial institutions loans on a short-term basis — loans are usually repaid within the same day — to make sure they have enough cash on-hand when customers want to withdraw their money. Usually banks borrow from each other to cover these short-term needs, but when that’s not possible they can use the discount window.
