Women in Banking Symposium Explores How Gender Diversity Can Foster Growth

The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, in collaboration with Bank on Women, Inc. and The Risk Management Association, is hosting its second annual Promoting Growth and Prosperity Through the Banking Industry: the Power of Gender Diversity in the Boardroom and C-Suite conference from Oct. 20 through Oct. 22. This complimentary virtual event will be comprised of sessions led by banking and industry professionals who will share data-driven insights and actionable ways to achieve gender diversity in high-level roles.

On the agenda this year:

  • Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond President Tom Barkin and Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President Mary Daly will discuss leading through the pandemic, diving into today’s economic environment and the disproportionate impacts the pandemic has had on women and minorities.
  • Keynote speaker Karin Kimbrough, chief economist for LinkedIn, will share her journey to LinkedIn as well as data and demographics on today’s job seekers and job opportunities.

“Research repeatedly shows that gender diverse boards and C-Suites consistently outperform competitors,” says Bank on Women, Inc. co-founder Jennifer Docherty. “As banks navigate the current challenging environment and position themselves to be competitive in a dynamic new world, an intentional leadership team that mirrors the gender diversity of its key constituents — its customer base, employee base and shareholder base — will out-perform banks that do not.”

An overarching goal of the conference is to present attendees with action-oriented ways to achieve their career and diversity goals. In fact, the planning team views the virtual nature of this year’s conference as a positive.

“We’re excited about the chance to broaden the invitation and encourage stronger participation from board chairs, CEOs and C-Suite executives throughout the Federal Reserve System,” said Cooper Killen, planning committee vice chair. “The issues we’re tackling in the conference have far-reaching impacts, and we’re looking forward to applying the wisdom of our incredible speakers to real-world scenarios.”

In addition to hearing from President Barkin and President Daly, attendees will participate in break-out sessions to discuss challenges and examine successful strategies that have worked to improve the gender disparity in their banks.
