About the Survey

The CFO Survey is one of the most comprehensive and longestā€running surveys of financial decision makers. Started in 1996 by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, the quarterly survey is now conducted in partnership with the Federal Reserve Banks of Richmond and Atlanta. The survey offers insights from business leaders on the financial outlook for their firms, the challenges they face, and their expectations for the economy. Those surveyed—including chief financial officers, owner-operators, vice presidents and directors of finance, accountants, controllers, treasurers, and others with financial decision-making roles—are particularly well-placed to assess their firms’ outlook in the context of the broader economy. The CFO Survey panel includes firms that range from small operations to Fortune 500 companies across all major industries.

For a fuller discussion of the survey’s history and enhancements, please read “Introducing The CFO Survey.” More details on changes to existing questions are available in The CFO Survey Methodology.
