Who We Are & What We Do

Video is temporarily unavailable.

Our Work

We often say that our work at the Richmond Fed impacts everyday people every day. For example, we play a role in things like ensuring ATMs have the cash you need. We also work to promote stable prices — so you can better plan for your major financial decisions — and offer programs and resources to help you learn about personal finance and how the economy works. And that’s just to name a few!

As part of the nation’s central bank, our job is to serve the American public — to serve you. The Richmond Fed is one of 12 regional Reserve Banks across the country, representing the Fifth District (the Carolinas, Maryland, Virginia, most of West Virginia and Washington, D.C.). We work together with the other regional Reserve Banks and the national Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., to achieve our public service mission of strengthening our economy and communities. We do this in a variety of ways, including:

  • promoting stable prices, employment and moderate interest rates through monetary policy;
  • ensuring our nation’s financial system is safe and sound and providing a secure and efficient way to transfer funds electronically; and
  • connecting with our District’s community and business leaders to better understand local economic conditions and address issues facing our communities.

Our People

Our diverse team is 2,700 employees strong. We bring integrity and passion to our work every day. And, while what we do is serious, our workplace is more casual — from the way we dress to the activities we share. It’s a friendly, inclusive place to be.

We’re led by President Tom BarkinFirst Vice President Becky Bareford and our management committee. Together, they ensure we’re focusing on the right things and are meeting our strategic and operational goals. We also have oversight from our Board of Directors, which brings diverse perspectives and provides information about local economic conditions and their respective industries.

We count ourselves lucky to have a presence in three vibrant cities — our headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, as well as offices in Baltimore, Maryland, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Our Communities

We connect with people around our District in a variety of ways — from building relationships and partnerships with leaders and organizations in our communities to educating about who we are and what we do. These connections allow us see the big picture of what’s happening across the Fifth District, which informs monetary policy, our research and other community development initiatives, and in turn, helps the Fed achieve its public service mission.

We also share our economic research, data and resources and educate about how the economy works through interactive exhibits, such as The Fed Experience, financial literacy programs and training for teachers.
